Hope Avenue

by Jack E. Dawson

Assuredly, I say to you, in as much as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.
Matthew 25:40

The persistent sound of a tiny bell interrupts the hustle and bustle of this cold big-city street, drawing our attention to the needs of others.  Even the lost puppy evokes our sympathy and concern.   With the faith of little children we drop our pocket change into the kettle, believing that somehow we can help.  The world map at the base of the kettle reminds us that the mission is worldwide.  The kettle holder becomes a staff in the nail-scarred hand of the One who calls us to give more than just money.  The eyes of Jesus Himself look to each one of us, asking if we will be the one to make a difference.  His gaze beseeches us take up His staff and share the hope so desperately needed by people everywhere, whether poor and destitute or rich and powerful.
